Obituary for Beatrice Gilliam Meador

Beatrice Gilliam Meador
Beatrice Gilliam Meador passed away on October 6, 2018 in Louisville KY. She lived in the Mount Union community of Scottsville, Ky most of her life until moving to Louisville for the last decade of her life. She was born on November 24, 1930 in Allen County to Fletcher and Eunice Gilliam, both of whom preceded her in death along with Billy Dee Meador, to whom she was married for nearly 65 years. She was also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Patricia Townsend Meador. She is survived by her children the Reverend Jim Dee Meador (Peggy) Louisville, LaReeca Meador James (Joe), Louisville, Dr. Keith G. Meador (Katie), Nashville TN, and Nanci Sledge Meador, Louisville; seven grandchildren, Kristopher Keith Meador (Keri), Emily Jackson (Derrick), Sarah James and Elizabeth James, all of Louisville, Hannah Meador of Chapel Hill, NC, John Meador (Maddy), and Dr. Catherine Meador of Boston MA; four great grandchildren, Evan Meador, Mackenzie Jackson, Morgan Jackson, and Maggie Meador all of Louisville; two sisters Erline Broughton of Scottsville KY and Emogene Stuart (Howard) of Bowling Green KY; and two sisters in-law, Shirley Meador and Bobbie Sue Sims of Scottsville KY.
Beatrice taught in Allen County Schools as an elementary school teacher for 26 years teaching 5th grade for most of those years. She graduated from Western Kentucky University going on to obtain her Master’s degree and Rank I. These accomplishments were achieved along with returning to complete high school after having married and had three children. She was a member of Mount Union United Methodist church for over 80 years where she served as a Sunday School teacher and organist. Along with her students in which Beatrice took great joy, she delighted in playing the piano and organ, as well as her flower garden in which she took great pride, and about which she never ceased to inquire after moving to Louisville and leaving her farm in the Mount Union community. Beatrice loved her family, her church, her dog, and her flower garden, but she will perhaps be most remembered as a faithful advocate and champion of her most vulnerable students, whose needs only a tender-hearted school teacher would perceive.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at 1 pm at Mount Union United Methodist Church (6499 Mount Union Road, Scottsville, KY 42164) with a grave side service at Mt. Union Cemetery to follow. Friends and family may pay their respect at Harwood & Strode Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 from 10:00 AM until 8:00 PM and at the church on Wednesday from 10AM until the time of service.
Flowers will be accepted or expressions of sympathy can be made to Mount Union United Methodist Cemetery Fund or The Kentucky United Methodist Homes for Children and Youth and can be made at the funeral home.
